fowler but as you can see, no delays. one accident reported now in largo. it's on ridge road just north of walling road. we have ems responding there. and we will have an update in a couple minutes. gene and gayle, back to you. >> thank you. we start with breaking news. at least 20 to 25 people including two firefighters are hurt after a possible explosion and fire at an apartment building in the washington, d.c. area. f trapped on the second and third floors. the fire involved at least two or three buildings. firefighters warn not everyone is accounted for right now, so clearly this story is still unfolding. we will bring you updates as soon as we know more. an 8 on your side report, danger on the roads. before you head out this morning for work or school, you will want to hear about a new study that points to what is

year. >> yeah, we not only have to be on the lookout for dangerous drivers but we need to be aware of dangerous debris. news channel 8's ryan hughes is live in pasco county this morning. it's a big problem, ryan. >> reporter: gene and gayle, good morning. a big problem caused by large and small objects on the roads. now a new study shows that more than 200,000 accidents in the past five years have been caused because of road debris on places like this, u.s. 19 here in and another shocking statistics. the accidents led to 39,000 injuries and 500 deaths according to aaa. a lot of debris flies out of vehicles and drivers simply forget to secure stuff like on apologetics that can lift up and take off. accidents caused by debris have jumped 40% since 2001. most debris related crashes happen on highways because

the chances of parts becoming detached. and a study shows florida is home to some of the worst drivers in the country. so you put these two together, gene, and you have a really bad combination. back to you. >> sounds like it. we got to be very careful out there and do our part securing items and make sure they don't become dangers on the road. thank you. happening today, a hearing in the case of hulk hogan verses gawker media in st. a judge ordered the website to pay hogan $140 million in damages in a sex tape case. shortly after that, gawker filed for bankruptcy. today's hearing is expected to focus on how the company will pay hogan and where the funds will come from. the hearing begins at 3:30. and today we expect an update on the zika virus from the federal health officials. the national institute of allergy and infectious disease will reveal new information.

nontravel related cases in our state. experts believe they originated in miami's winwood neighborhood. this morning, new questions about ride safety after a 10- year-old boy dice on the world's tallest water slide. >> and the park is back open but the ride remains closed. news channel 8's lindsey mastis joins us. we are getting a lot of comments on facebook. >> reporter: yeah, a lot of people are wondering how this happened. investigators are not revealing much but two women that witnessed part of the tragedy as it happen, speaking out now and calling for changes to the ride. >> i think they definitely need to fix the straps on the ride. you would think for something that's known for being the tallest slide in the world, they would have more secure straps than velcro. >> i think they need to fix the jostling around. your neck gets shaken around really good and you hit your head a lot.

is surfacing showing riders going airborne on this test model of the ride in texas. that video is from 2014. and we're learning that in the early test of the ride, some sandbags flew off the rafts and engineers had to redo some of the angles. the 10-year-old died of a neck injury but investigators are not saying how it happened. the boy's family has asked for privacy as they prepare for his funeral on friday. we will continue to follow this story and let investigators find out about this ride. >> devastating for the family. >> absolutely. and makes you question all rides. >> it does. and the regulation and who is monitoring all this stuff. it does. as a parent, it leaves you questioning it. >> it's concerning. thank you. a home owner in sarasota got the shock when a big tree came crashing down. you got to see this. this is on lockwood meadows drive. you can see a big tree limb fell over the car on the driveway. the homeowners say there were

can't explain how this happened. days of rain are causing problems with street flooding. this was the scene last night near 50th street. high water covering the roads and drivers tapping the brakes. the water has since receded. this one is straight out of a thriller. stuck in the mud with poisonous snakes all around. >> a lakeland man lived through this nightmare. i can't imagine. the 78-year-old bob royals behis home. his flashlight fell and when he reached in to get it, he got stuck in the water with snakes all around him. eight hours later, eight hours he was stuck there. some workers with the city of lakeland spotted bob. >> i pulled up and saw him and said, what in the world are you doing here? >> i said, waiting for somebody to pick me up. >> he was covered with mud and banged up. just glad he's okay. >> yeah, lucky they saw him.

there, the little girl is holding on. that's so neighbor cans stop by and watch all the olympic action in the front yard. yeah, he deserves a gold medal in the spirit competition. across america, police shoot and kill a 14-year-old boy in los angeles. it happened as officers were checking out a call involving gang related vandalism. when officers arrived, they claim he was armed with a hand gun and firing toward them. the officer who sh wearing a body camera so investigators are going over to see if it helps determine what happened. and tornado terror in connecticut. you've got to see the video. it's a twister tearing through new haven. you can see it swirling in the center of the screen. the national weather service reports winds winds between 56 to 85 miles per hour. it did cause some damage like this. the tornado leaving behind downed trees and broken

and impressive images out of ohio. take a close look. yep, that is a semi-truck that crashed right into a house. luckily no one was home at the time. a passenger the truck was injured but should be okay. no word on what caused the driver to lose control of the semi and crash. frozen is better than fresh when it comes to embryos. the group who received the frozen embryos had more live births than those who received fresh embryos. scientists say it's because the uterus is able to recover before the embryo is implanted. something to consider for your children with peanut allergies. and about fighting it with peanuts. it was tried on a group of 40 kids ages 1 to 3 in a

study the. they were exposed to small, gradually increased amounts of peanut protein each day. and two years later, almost 80% were able to tolerate peanuts without an allergic reaction. for her dog, casper is a lifesaver. he is a service dog who alerts her to she hopes this week will raise awareness for service dogs across the country and beyond. >> i've had a lot of access issues lately where people didn't know the laws and what they were supposed to do when a service dog comes into the business. so i think education and awareness will help. >> they go everywhere together. he even went to prom and walk add cross the stage with her when she graduated from high

the buc's first pre-season game is tonight. they face the eagles in philly. because of the olympics, you will have to catch the game on great 38 at 7:00 p.m. the buc's head coach wants to make sure this game goes through without any injuries and he wants to see every player get in that game, especially the guys fighting for spots on the team. another team, another lost series for the rays. the blue jays blanking tampa to win the series 2-1. going on offense. a different story for toronto though. they scored seven runs to win 7- 0. the blue jays are just a few points behind baltimore for the lead in the al east. so it's a question many of us face. what would you do if you missed a flight? >> how about book another flight? or rent a car. >> yeah. >> that wasn't good enough for this guy. a man out of spain did something that secured him a spot in jail. here's the video.
